General

Heritance Ahungalla is a five-star luxury hotel with 152 rooms located on 15 acres of beachfront on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. It is the ideal place to enjoy a relaxing beach holiday while being pampered by our world-class service.

It is also the perfect luxury base from which to go on a river safari along the Madu Ganga, visit the Kosgoda turtle hatchery or take in the culture and history of Galle and Sri Lanka’s coastal villages.

Heritance Ahungalla was designed by local architect Geoffrey Bawa, famous for blending interior and exterior spaces, connecting buildings with the natural environment.

You can see this for yourself as you first approach the hotel. Your first view is of a group of stately coconut trees reflected in a mirror-like pool, before your gaze slides across the polished floor of the open lobby straight through to the ocean beyond.

The infinity pool makes you feel as if you are in the ocean itself when you get in and your eye level is just above the water.

Our stylish bedrooms and suites offer wonderful sea views. As well as the delicious buffets and theme nights in ourJute Restaurant, we offer fine dining in the Upper Room and some more exotic, unusual options . In particular, don’t forget to try our special Heritance cuisine.

Heritance Ahungalla has won numerous awards for its food, and we have reached the Green Globe benchmark for our environmental practices.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and known until 1972 as Ceylon, is an island country in South Asia near south-east India.

Sri Lanka has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest. Its documented history spans 3,000 years, with evidence of pre-historic human settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years. Its geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to World War II.

A diverse and multicultural country, Sri Lanka is home to many religions, ethnic groups, and languages. In addition to the majority Sinhalese, it is home to large groups of Sri Lankan and Indian Tamils, Moors, Burghers, Malays, Kaffirs and the aboriginal Vedda. Sri Lanka has a rich Buddhist heritage, and the first known Buddhist writings of Sri Lanka, the Pāli Canon, dates back to the Fourth Buddhist Council in 29 BC. The country’s recent history has been marred by a thirty-year civil war which decisively ended when Sri Lankan military defeated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 2009.

Sri Lanka is a republic and a unitary state governed by a presidential system. The legislative capital, Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, is a suburb of the commercial capital and largest city, Colombo. An important producer of tea, coffee, gemstones, coconuts, rubber, and the native cinnamon,[15] the island contains tropical forests and diverse landscapes with much biodiversity.

Sri Lanka has had a long history of international engagement, as a founding member of SAARC, a member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations, the G77, and the Non-Aligned Movement. It is the only country in South Asia that is currently rated “high” on the Human Development Index.

Sports & nature

Sport in Sri Lanka is a significant part of Sri Lankan culture. Volleyball is the national sport in Sri Lanka. Cricket is the most popular sport in Sri Lanka. Rugby union is also popular. Other popular sports are water sports, badminton, athletics, football, basketball and tennis. Sri Lanka's schools and colleges regularly organize sports and athletics teams, competing on provincial and national levels.

The Sri Lanka national cricket team achieved considerable success beginning in the 1990s, rising from the underdog status to winning the 1996 Cricket World Cup. The Sri Lankan national cricket team reached the finals of the 2007 Cricket World Cup, where they lost to Australia at the Kensington Oval, in Bridgetown, Barbados. After qualifying to play in the finals of the 2011 Cricket World Cup, Sri Lanka was beaten by India. The legendary Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan also ended his incredible career at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai which hosted the 2011 World Cup finals. The national cricket team of Sri Lanka has won the Asia Cup in 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008 and 2014.
